August in East Texas can be one of the toughest months of the year on your landscape. High temperatures, intense sun, and periods of limited rainfall can quickly stress lawns, shrubs, flowers, and newly installed plants.

The good news is that a few simple changes can help protect your landscape through the hottest part of summer and prepare it for a strong fall.

1. Water Deep, Not Just Often

During extreme summer heat, proper watering is one of the most important parts of maintaining a healthy landscape.

Instead of lightly watering every day, established lawns and plants generally benefit from deeper watering that encourages roots to grow farther into the soil. Early morning is typically the best time to water because temperatures are cooler and less water is lost to evaporation.

Newly installed sod, trees, shrubs, and landscape plants require closer attention because their root systems are still becoming established.

Always adjust watering based on rainfall, soil conditions, plant needs, and any local watering restrictions.

2. Don’t Cut Your Lawn Too Short

It can be tempting to mow grass extremely short during summer, but scalping your lawn can add even more stress during the August heat.

Leaving appropriate height for your particular grass variety helps provide shade to the soil and allows the turf to better handle hot, dry conditions.

Sharp mower blades are also important. Dull blades tear grass instead of cutting it cleanly, which can leave the lawn looking brown and stressed.

3. Check Your Mulch

Mulch isn’t just for appearance. A proper layer of mulch can help retain soil moisture, moderate soil temperatures, and reduce weed pressure.

By August, mulch installed earlier in the year may have settled, washed away, or become thin in certain areas.

Check landscape beds around trees and shrubs and refresh mulch where necessary. Avoid piling mulch directly against tree trunks or plant stems.

4. Watch for Heat-Stressed Plants

Wilting, browning leaves, leaf drop, and declining plants can all become more noticeable during late summer.

However, more water isn’t always the answer.

Poor drainage, improper planting depth, excessive watering, disease, pests, and unsuitable plant selection can sometimes look like drought stress. Identifying the actual problem before replacing plants can save money and prevent the same issue from happening again.

5. Start Planning Your Fall Landscape Projects

August is also a great time to start thinking ahead.

As temperatures begin to cool later in the year, homeowners often start tackling landscape renovations, new beds, drainage improvements, hardscapes, seasonal color, and other outdoor projects.

Planning those projects now gives you time to develop the design, choose materials and plants, establish a budget, and get installation scheduled.
